I am convinced all great fairy tales must begin in a forest rendezvous with Death and this one adds in an encounter with Fortune for good measure! In this Grimm retelling, Vanya is a crafty but unlucky thief who seems to have perfected her con to a science until the night she is caught. The moxie Vanya demonstrates as her heist unfolds makes me want to root for her despite me knowing consequences will soon be dealt. This is a Grimm tale after all and I expect a lesson is meant to be learned, but that won't stop me from hoping the little thief gets her own happily ever after in the end.
