While reading Little Darlings, my heart broke continually for Lauren Tranter, who we're introduced to in the midst of a difficult birth. Her twins, however, arrive unscathed, two perfect baby boys. What follows is Lauren's descent into some of the worst episodes of post-partum depression I've ever read about. She calls emergency one night claiming a woman has come into her room at the hospital asking for her babies. Unable to sleep and in no big hurry to go home, Lauren would be happy to stay in the hospital indefinitely. However, her useless husband convinces her to come home. Patrick Tranter is as useless as a father as he is a husband, claiming to be too tired to help with the babies at night when they're most active. Thus the bulk of the work falls on exhausted Lauren, but that's okay because according to Patrick it's "woman's work" to raise children. But the creepy woman won't leave Lauren alone, and Detective Harper, who has a funny feeling about this case, is determined to get to the bottom of things. Basically, all the female characters in this book were awesome with incredible depth, but all the male characters (except Gideon) were crap: awful, annoying, and incompetent. The only thing I didn't like was the haze of ambiguity hanging around the ending, but otherwise I'd recommend this because the story was unique, engaging, and I definitely wanted to keep reading more.
