This book was amazing and creepy in all the right ways. It referenced folklore, mythology, and Grimm's Fairy Tales while telling a fairy tale of its own. Interwoven with Lauren's own struggle to save her twin sons is the investigation of DS Harper, the only woman on the department who believes that Lauren might not be mad. Harper gives us the eyes and ears of the skeptic, of the rational, who lets us know that we can believe what we are seeing and hearing, and that our fear can indeed be validated. Lauren is a sympathetic character and I definitely felt her panic and her sense of unraveling. This book was cleverly written and well paced with plenty of suspense and old-fashioned horror. I would highly recommend it.
