SPOILER ALERTS!!

It is rare that I give a book five stars, and this one certainly exceeded my expectations. Smucker details the inner workings of a child's imagination perfectly — most of the time I fully believed what I was reading was the reality for the characters. It was a perfect example of how most children experience their lives.

Secondly, this book brought back some of my own reservations and fears from a fire and brimstone church I attended as a child that left me fearful of religion. It was incredibly interesting to me that Cohen experiences some of life's biggest dangers (in this case an angry father) as a religious relic (The Beast).

I'm looking forward to reading more of Smucker's books!
