These chapters gave an interesting introduction to the cast of characters. There are two "families" of characters. First are the "cool kids, the popular's". These are the upper class and upper middle class students; the ones who live in the nicest homes with pools and take super vacations. They include Gabe, a not nearly rich Chicano guy who is very popular with the cheerleaders. His girlfriend of the moment is an alpha-female, a wild and entitled girl named Sasha. She doesn't take orders from anyone and lets you know right off who's in charge.

Then there are the poorer, more average kids. This group is made up of the Drama Club kids. They include Elyse, a shy, blonde thesbian. Her mother is a single mother hooked on Oxycodone and living in a small dive apartment. Elyse has little or no sense of self-confidence and is the complete opposite of Sasha. Elyse has tried out for the school play and is shocked to learn that she has won the role of Juliet.

The only significant story device has been an accident that Gabe was in. Though not injured, Gabe was shaken up a bit. A girl named Catherine stopped to help him and called in 911--but there is no clue as to who drove the car that hit Gabe.

I love the crisp, well written, and natural sounding dialogue and was immediately drawn into the book. I was very disappointed when the "first impression" excerpt ended, and I look forward to reading the book through!
