I have never read anything written by Wilbur Smith until this book and it was interesting. I like his writing style, and found the story to be interesting. Some spots were slow for me. Reading out of the series order probably doesn't help much to be completely in the know how about the characters and any previous ties to the series. I think how descriptive and detailed he is in setting the stage for his story is great and really gives the story the character to feel like you are there! He describes Africa with such beauty, his wording can be intricate with some things to give them a very personal feel, but I was hoping for a little more action and thrill. Not previously knowing the characters, I think from a first time experience his characters are pretty well developed! The cover is really eye-catching and bold to give the book that feeling of authority. I was hoping this would hook me a little more, but in fairness I am thinking maybe I needed to have more background of the series.
