Maya Stark is a young, new language therapist in a psychiatric facility assigned to an uncommunicative young man who along with his father had been missing for 10 years and presumed dead. Then the young man, Lucas, is discovered ransacking an outfitter store and arrested. Because he is violent and won’t talk he is committed to the psychiatric hospital where Maya works and where she was once a patient. The treatment and relationship between Maya and Lucas is very rocky, but Maya is persistent because of her backstory.

I enjoyed Ms. Mejia’s writing and ideas—nobody’s perfect, relationships aren’t always perfect, sometimes we do the wrong things for the right reasons—lots of things for book clubs to discuss.

This was my first book by Mindy Mejia but will not be my last. It was a little slow at the beginning, but picked up speed as the story progressed, and the last third of the book just flew by and was very suspenseful and unpredictable.
