First off - nice Table of Contents (TOC). Almost makes up for the missing index. The TOC includes subheadings as well as headings, so this should help readers navigate to the parts they are most interested in reading.
The writing style is clear and engaging. I don't feel overwhelmed with incomprehensible science-speak nor do I feel talked down to. A very good first chapter to what looks be a a very interesting book.
