Lavender House is the story of ex-detective Evander “Andy” Mills investigating a death at a wealthy estate, tucked away from the busy life of San Francisco. Andy was recently kicked off of the force for being gay in 1950s SF. When he is invited to Lavender House to investigate, he finds himself immersed in a world where other people like him are able to live freely within its gates.

From the beginning, I really loved this book. The writing was superb and the characters were strong. I’ve read a lot of LGBTQ+ lately that’s just been meh, Lavender House really brought out important themes and character development often lacking in the genre. Though the ending was predictable I still really enjoyed the story. The plot was more character driven and less focused on action but this actually played well into the atmosphere.

Lastly I’ll say that this reminded me so much of Agatha Christie blended with Knives Out and really made me appreciate the mystery genre once again.
