In the beginning of this excerpt we meet a former investigator who was fired from his job when his boss found out he was gay. It’s the 1950’s. He’s suicidal. While he’s having another drink and basically plotting his own demise, a woman comes in and starts talking to him. She heard about what happened to him and she wants to hire him to investigate who killed her wife. She mentions that while her home was very accepting that it had its costs: she was never who to trust on the outside and she might have trusted someone inside the home so much that they got away with murder. She feels like she can actually trust him in part because he can understand some of what she’s been through.
