The style is descriptive. The atmosphere is both steeped in the 1950s era and the unique vibe of the few safe havens for lgbt individuals in that era. Add to that a classic whodunit murder mystery plot and you’ve got one odd book that I’m loving so far.

Even having just met the characters, they all appear to be three dimensional and complex. They all clearly have their contradictions, secrets, and defense mechanisms. (Perfect for a murder mystery novel.) The main character is intelligent and likable. I hope to see things get better for him. I’m also loving Pearl, the window of the victim. She’s smart and strong and human.

Despite 1950s period pieces not being my usual jam, I’m liking it. I want to know what happens to the characters and who the murderer is. It’s also cool to get a look into the (fictional) lives of the lgbt community that much of 1950s society liked to pretend didn’t exist.
