I liked this book more than Vacationland because it was more traditional in how it was written. Instead of little vignettes, it was a continuous story told through several points of view. However, I liked Vacationland a bit more because there were more active characters throughout the book. I missed some of those characters in Laurentian Divide. See? However, regardless of the presentation, Ms. Stonich does a wonderful job of portraying the everyday people who inhabit Hatchet Inlet in very rural Minnesota. The story is very character driven but still manages to capture the beauty of living so very close to the land. This makes for a nice easy paced read that still manages to sneak in a few bits of action and surprise!
