I enjoyed reading this excerpt. I can picture this town and these people, so unique and well drawn. It reminds me of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. I thought the author does an excellent job of setting up the mystery while introducing readers to the town inhabitants and giving a sense of place.

My family hosted a Finnish exchange student when I was a teen, Elina told us the Finnish joke about a man who built his house in a remote area on a river. One day something floated downriver that indicated another person had settled upriver. The man urged through the woods several days, found the interloper and shot him. The story was a lesson on the nature of the Finn. The missing man made me think of that story.

I want to know more about these folks.
