The Last Call Killer: a serial killer who targeted gay men in a time when queer lives were the most vulnerable and the government didn't really care.

This book details the series of investigations done on each victim, all horrifically mutilated, how they were connected to the same murderer, and Richard Rogers, TLCK himself. Peter Anderson, Tom Mulcahy, Anthony Marrero, Michael Sakara. Those are the names of the victims. Aside from the investigation, this book is mostly a portrait of queer New York and the lives of these men before and after they were targeted by TLCK. The author humanizes them, doesn't treat them as just another name on a list.

I really enjoyed the way Elon Green went about presenting this story. He has a very conversational style of writing, and no part really overstayed its welcome, keeping the narrative engaging. The story eventually makes it to how they catch Rogers. He's sentenced to over two life terms in prison. The judge had the following to say in the end:

"It's the purpose of this sentence to do everything within my power to assure society that you never walk free again and that you die in some hole in some prison without ever having freedom again. And hopefully society will find some modicum of justice in that, because there's nothing else I can do."

Whenever it comes to true crime, the sentencing in the end is always the most satisfying. It was a bit hard to read "Last Call" given the subject matter, but I appreciate its existence immensely.
