I always say I want to read more non-fiction and books like Last Call: A True Story of Love, Lust, and Murder in Queer New York are exactly the reason why! This book was gripping from the beginning.

This book tells the true story of the Last Call Killer; a serial killer who targeted gay men in the 90s in NYC. It goes victim by victim all over the tristate area. It gives a deep look at each victim and their background. Not all of these men were open about their sexuality so it was such a surprise to many of their families. It also delves into the history of the actual killer and how strange and erratic his behavior was with no one ever really calling him out.

I was very interested in a lot of the forensic talk especially since the book discusses the 90s. I love the fingerprinting technology used on the plastic bags which they needed to ask a favor for help from the Toronto Police Service!

It is a very gritty story of well before my time in the city, but I love learning about my adopted hometown and it’s different times. The book mentions many queer landmarks such as the Stonewall Inn and Marie’s Crisis which are still open to this day.

This book was hard to read at time because of the sensitive nature of the book, but also because of how the NYPD wouldn’t help these victims and how journalists wouldn’t report on these crimes. It makes me sick to my stomach that men were being specifically targeted and the police and media wouldn’t take these crimes seriously.
