I had a hard time getting through this book. I really enjoy true crime and serial killers but this just wasn't for me. There was some language related to gay culture I'm not familiar with and the many geographical references were totally over my head. The crimes themselves may have been interesting but were blotted out by the writing style. I feel it lacks balance, too many unnecessary details at some points, too few details at others. Lots of background about people and establishments that are not relating to the actual case.
There's a good bit of skipping around and with this I think a more linear story would have come across better.
I was also disappointed that the author never presented any speculation as to the perpetrator's motivations or mindset. Surely the investigators would have had some indication, and this is a recent enough case that forensic psychology would have been in use at the time. The author reports previous cases that the killer was involved in, but I had a hard time seeing the connection between the two sets of crimes. More information would have been helpful to understand the escalation of the murders and the changes in his signature and MO.
Perhaps someone familiar with New York and the gay lifestyle will get more out of this.
