Absolutely beautiful, Land of Big Numbers is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. It is rich with themes of freedom, loyalty, resiliency, love and loneliness.

This volume is comprised of ten unique stories. Some stories were funny and whimsical while others were utterly heartbreaking. The stories include an ambitious inventor, a risk-taking investor, a group stranded on a train platform, and fruit that evokes feelings. There are stories of marriage and friendship, the tension of the parent/child relationship, and the reliance on or rebellion from government. While the stories are different, if feels as if each character has a deep longing for something: freedom, fame, fortune, or simply the desire to know and be known.

I probably could have devoured this book in one sitting. Instead I made myself read slowly, savoring each story. Even at the end I was still longing for more.
