Short stories are a difficult genre for me because if they are good, I want more. I flew through The Land of Big Numbers in a couple of days. The stories were about modern day China and/or immigrants from China and were extremely relatable. The stories are character driven and unique but so relatable regardless of whether you have any experience with China. I think this book is going to be a sleeper bestseller -- and I know it is already one of Oprah's books to look forward to. I look forward to more stories from this author. The only complaint I have is that I wanted to know more about these characters and I did not want the stories to end. That, to me, is the mark of a great short story collection. Pick this one up, you will not be disappointed. The author is a reporter who has experience in China and that obviously comes through in her short stories.
