Wow! I hope I win a copy of 'Land of Big Numbers.' The synopsis of this book and even the title itself had not prepared me for the emotional impact of the sample pages. What a interesting opening scene, as well as one that is blood chilling: a patient is left dead on her operating table with the staff's medical certificates all ripped off the wall so no one could track them down. Whew! And then, as the story develops and I thought about everything that had happened in the U.S.A. (where I live), the live of Lulu, the twin sister, who dedicated herself to activism seemed so completely timely and relevant even though she was in China and I was a world away. I liked the writing style and the intimate details of the characters' lives which made them seem like people I personally knew and cared about (emphasis on the latter.) Eliciting concern from the reader for the characters requires special writing. This book indeed has that writing.
