As a teacher of English as a second language, my two favorite things to see in books are (1) books written by diverse authors that reflect their cultures and societies and (2) characters and themes concerned with social justice and equality in the set community. “Land of Big Numbers” stunningly meets both.

The writing is familiar and relatable, down to the nuanced mental reactions of the main character. The opening chapters make me feel that aching discomfort of watching the people around you ramp up to appeal for justice (even in the face of violence and corruption) and not understanding what your role is. I am eager to dive deeper into this story and watch our main character develop and respond to his twin’s advocacy.
