Thanks to BookishFirst and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

First off, I love this cover! It’s dark, mysterious, and gothic and does a good job of starting to tell the story before we even read the synopsis. Major points for that!

Next let’s talk about our characters starting with Violeta. I felt like she was better in the beginning of the book when she was more focused on protecting Arien. As the story moved on, she seemed more self centered (and more caught up in Rowan), even though it’s said she was self sacrificing. She was self sacrificing, she was brave, I just felt like something was a twinge off at the end. I would’ve liked to have seen more of her relationship with Arien towards the end instead of all of her attention being on Rowan.

I feel like the others could’ve each been fleshed out just a little bit more, would’ve liked to have learned more about Rowan. History and back story on Lord Under would’ve been nice too. For Arien, once Violeta stopped focusing on him, we don’t see him as much and therefore don’t really learn anything else about him. Would be nice for him to be more a part of the story, maybe even have some parts told from his perspective. Also, Clover! This is one of Violeta’s first female friends and they just barely interact.

Pacing was good, but it felt like there should’ve been more of a middle. It’s a little bit slow in the beginning, gets going good, jumps ahead in a romantic sense (I just don’t like where a couple is fighting one day and kissing the next), and keeps going at a steady pace till the end.

Setting was perfection. Clipstone does a great job with dreamy descriptions and putting you where Violeta is. Wouldn’t change a thing about that!

End of the day, I really enjoyed the book. It definitely kept me guessing about how exactly the ending was going to go and how everything was going to tie in. Can’t wait for the next book!
