“There are monsters in the world. There are monsters in the woods there’s a monster in the shadows and now it knows my name”

Lakesedge by Lyndall Clipstone is Violeta Gracelings story. Found at the edge of the woods with her baby brother, with only the information of their names and that their parents are dead, they’re taken in by a women who is cruel to them. Arien, her brother is troubled by nightmares that make him interesting to the monster of Lakesedge, a man held by the Corruption and the past that he killed his family.

This is a first person, fade-to-black young adult fantasy. This felt like a modern day fairytale, but the non-Disney version where it’s kind of messed up. There are several myths that play into the plot of this book, that all meshed together surprisingly well.

The main character Leta annoyed me. There was no point in this book where I enjoyed her. She was willing to throw everything away despite being given several examples of why it was a bad idea. I know we’re supposed to love Rowan, and their relationship, but I didn’t enjoy that either.

This has a great plot. Super unique, I was very excited to read it, but lackluster characters and rushed romance took away from it for me. It was enjoyable, but I don’t see myself continuing the story.
