This book had everything you want in a Gothic book - magic, a creepy old manor, a dark brooding love interest. It had Beauty and the Beast vibes as well. Also, how awesome is the cover. That alone was enough to make me decide I wanted to read it, and know I would like it.
I was able to connect with the main character, Leta, and I loved the way she watched out for her little brother. She had a great growth journey leading all the way up to the cliff-hanger ending. I also appreciated the side characters, the housekeeper and the younger brother, as well as the friend who helps Leta learn to control her power.
The were plenty of suspenseful moments which kept me turning pages late into the night. I am so excited to read the second book and see where this story is going to go next. Any fans of gothic-y fiction will love this one, but I think it will really appeal to fans of Only a Monster, Mexican Gothic, and Small Favors.
