This is off to an excellent start. The author is creating a well done atmosphere of sinister and mystery as Violeta (Leta) and her brother, Arien, are introduced. The opening scene with the shadows is exactly the type of dark/cursed fantasy that grabs my interest immediately.
Already the reader is introduced to a life where Leta tries to protect her brother from the shadows that possess and torment him and the adoptive mother who abuses the evil away (or so she thinks). It gave me an emotional connection created between character and reader.
I cannot wait to learn more about the siblings relation to the Vair Woods, the loss of their true parents and what will occur with the Monster of Lakesledge, Lord Sylvanan. The hint at the darkness creeping in his veins was a wonderful tease. I absolutely need more!
