While I think this book has a decent premise and enjoyed some of the magic/worldbuilding aspects in this excerpt, I just wasn't very drawn in by these first few chapters. Not necessarily in a bad way, I can see this book being really appealing for some people, but it just didn't necessarily work for me, at least not right away. I liked the sibling relationship present between Violeta and her brother and think her desire to protect him makes her a solid protagonist. Still, I found the style a little bit repetitive in places, like repeating over and over that her brother is good and so can't belong to the dark, or that the darkness shouldn't be overcoming him during the day at all more than once.
