I had a really, really tough time with this book. Normally, I can read a book within a week or two, this one took me almost a month. I just didn’t really have the desire to pick it back up. There was nothing that caught me in its grasp and made me want to keep reading.

The Story: I think the story had potential to be good, but there was something lacking and I can’t quite put my finger on what it was. The story was boring and extremely hard to get into. It definitely picked up in the second half, but by the time I got there, I think I was over it.

The Characters: I didn’t really like our main character Michael. There was nothing that really set him apart from the other characters, which is odd as he’s our main character. He was so caught up and worried about his family legacy that he let his ego control his actions and cause countless problems for him. The other characters weren’t given much substance or personality. They were hard to decipher from one another as they didn’t have unique qualities to distinguish them from each other.

The Writing: Despite the length of the book, there was a lack of description that made it hard to read. For example, the city was discussed throughout the book, but never really described in a way that I could form a picture in my head. I was constantly confused about locations of things and had a hard time following.

Overall, this was not a book for me and I’m not sure if I would be able to recommend it to others. While it did pick up in the second half, it took so long to get to that point that it didn’t really deliver.
