Okay -- disclaimer: I loved the first look and synopsis for this book and REALLY wanted to love the book itself. I was THRILLED to receive this book on Bookishfirst; but once I started reading I found myself let down and almost deceived? The first look sounded so good and the book just fell flat from there. It's also worth mentioning that this read more closely to that of a YA fantasy when billed as an adult fantasy - something I don't mind but others may.

I for one usually love magic systems in books and this one sounds amazing, with a magic system that feeds on memories - that's a phenomenal concept! I was disappointed that the magic system was barely explored! Along with the world building being minimal it's a huge let down for the reader.

The plot features too many tropes, the main character acts impulsively, repeats the same actions with no reasonable explanation. The plots twists are predictable, you could see them coming from miles away.

Ultimately though, the concept and story do grab my interest and I hope that this is an instance of the second installment clearing up and fixing all the previous issues! I will look forward to the next book and hope that the magic is further explored while also giving us more background into the world.
