I thought this would be my kind of book

When I first read the synopsis of Kingdom of Liars, I said that this was exactly the kind of book I was interested in. I love sci-fi, I love magic, and I love drama in books. Plus, the book was blurbed by one of my favorite authors, so I thought I was set for a four or five-star read.

I was sorely mistaken. Instead of getting all of those things that I loved, what followed was a jumbled mess of poorly fleshed out ideas, a magic system that should have made sense but didn't at all, and a first-person POV that I hated.

I am not one to usually hate on an author's choice of POV, many books that work well as first-person would be horrible in third-person and vice versa. This was a book that would have been so much better as a third-person POV novel. Not only did I feel like I was being talked down to as the reader, but I also felt like since we were exploring the world with the narrator, things that should be explained and fleshed out in a magical novel were instead muddled and confusing.

It is not a book that I would recommend, and I will not be continuing the series.
