I had high hopes for this book based on the premise. The prologue is interesting but dense. My biggest problems begin in the first chapter. The author could have earned my sympathy for the MC if he had shown the MC’s drive and need for money while he’s conning nobles. It would have increased my suspense, which is very important for keeping a reader around.
You generally know within the first chapter if you are able to connect with a character or not. I can’t seem to connect with this one. He falls flat. I think it’s because I don’t know what his wants, needs, and desires are. Knowing what drives a character, and knowing their internal struggle from the start, really helps to hook a reader.
