Let me begin by saying that I absolutely loved this book! I am extremely selective with Fantasy genre stories, and this one was a fresh find with a magic system that was not old, tired, or familiar. I read it cover to cover in one afternoon.

I appreciated how the author kept the plot moving at a steady pace throughout the novel. The last 100 or so pages had me reading faster to find out what happened next. The mystery of whodunnit maintained it's stakes and interest while worldbuilding and the characters were introduced and established.

For me, the story did not feel gimmicky or recycled, but genuinely fresh and interesting. Michael Kingman was not "the chosen one" or some long-lost hero who returns to the glory that was sung of old. Instead, he is a very real character in his struggles and obsession with restoring his family's name and legacy while learning difficult truths about emotional times in his past childhood.

This is one of my favorite lines, "We're all selfish monsters, the only difference is some of us are more honest about it than others."

An excellent debut novel, and I am excited to pick up the sequel!
