This book was not for me. I will say after reading the synopsis and getting a taste for the book, I thought it would be something that I would really enjoy. Sadly, it did not deliver. I do expect others will really enjoy the book (and judging from the reviews on other sites, many do!), but for me it was lacking.
But, all of that said, the author does as good job of creating a new and interesting world and the magic is intriguing.
As others have commented, it does seem to have a bit of a Pokemon vibe, which my kids would enjoy (at least in movie form), but it made the story a little juvenile for me. I think the toughest part for me was that the book just didn't quite hit a home run. It was more romance than adventure, more comic book than authentic, and had things been reversed a little bit I think I could have really enjoyed the story. Sadly it wasn't quite there for me.
