Kingdom of Exiles by Maxym M. Martineau is a romance novel that is reminiscent of both Pokémon and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Leena is a beast charmer who is on her own after being exiled and has a bounty placed on her head for doing something illegal. She makes a deal with Noc, a dangerous and extremely powerful assassin, to acquire beasts for him. Together, they embark on a quest to find and catch mythical creatures and get to know each other as more than just an assassin and his mark.
I absolutely LOVED this book. I read the adult version, in which the characters are aged up from the YA version and contains more adult content. I truly appreciated the world-building, characters, character development, and tropes that were present in this book. The romance was done so well and I really enjoyed the plot. I immediately ordered and read the second book, The Frozen Prince, after reading this novel and am eagerly anticipating the third novel, The Shattered Crown.
