This book totally hits every single one of my sweet spots when it comes to genre fiction. It is a wonderful mix of urban and classic fantasy with romance, action, and intrigue added into the mix to create a book that denies you the chance to put it down.
The leading lady, Leena, is a Charmer in exile who wants nothing more than to prove her innocence. The leading man, Noc, is the leader of an undead assassins guild that has many painful secrets in his past. They're explosively brought together and find themselves on the same path of discovery and redemption.
Neither the idea of collecting monsters to do your bidding nor undead assassins are totally original ideas, but I love how well Martineau took possession of them and turned it into something wholly her own. There are depth and nuance to every detail of her story and it really does make for a tremendously good read.
If the stellar world-building and plot development weren't enough to make me a fan and salivate at the thought of a next book, I also fell in love with all the characters and want to see everyone get a happy ending. Definitely looking forward to whatever Martineau does next in this world.
