King of Kings is a sweeping tale of betrayal, redemption and love during the reign of the British Empire. The war between the British and Sudanise rebels left a lot of collateral damage, including the taking of women as war prizes.
Wilbur Smith does a good job of delicately describing the horrors of navigating a harem, without delving into salacious details. His writing style accurately captures the cattiness and petty slights that were all too common in the British ex-pats. An unwritten code of conduct and dress made outsiders feel uncomfortable, which was exactly the point. Without giving away any of the adventures, know that there are many to be had in this period drama. I would definitely recommend it.
