Fun period-piece adventure.
I enjoyed the book's setting of Cairo, etc., in the 1880s. It was cool to picture this atmosphere. And what's not to love about opium dens?
With a period setting and some fighting and derring-do, this has a bit of an Anthony Hope "Prisoner Of Zenda" feeling, so that was something I liked.
I'm predisposed to like tales of globetrotting colonialists from back in the days before we knew that colonialism is actually a bad thing.
I could definitely picture this as a movie, with the setting and the relationships between characters like Ryder and the beautiful Saffron. I picture beautiful photography and white dresses and the shining sun drenching the scenes.
All in all a fun read, and the hardcover edition has gorgeous endpapers!
