A bit of romance, a bit of soap opera, a hint of scandal, and the promise of adventure. King of Kings is a colonial story set in 1888 Cairo involving a love triangle of sorts between the dashing Penrod Ballantyne, hungry for military promotion, his fiancée Amber Pembroke, one of the few survivors of a siege and a published writer at just 16, and Penrod’s older (at the advanced age of twenty-five, in Amber’s estimation) former lover, the scheming Lady Agatha.

The preview leads me to think that enough back story will be present to make me want the rest of the series and leaves me wondering if Amber will bow to societal norms, if Penny will come to terms with the unconventional ways of his fiancée, and just how far Lady Agatha will go to get what she wants. Reminiscent of desert adventures and historical romance novels I read in the eighties, I’m definitely intrigued. Predicting a 3.5 star rating.
