I’m really conflicted with this book. I love parts of it and Rivera’s voice is so unique in the YA field, but I think that’s part of the issue. I didnt really read this as a YA book; the concepts are very valid and from working with teenagers, something that they grapple with every day, but the language and specificity of the topics felt like you had to be part of club to understand the lingo. Rivera does their best to teach along the way, which I greatly appreciate, because though I consider myself and ally, I am still learning as much as Juliet is throughout the novel. I’m left with many questions about the storyline - a lot of loose ends around Juliet’s internship, relationships, and family in particular seemed rushed toward the end - but also empowered and confident in the importance of this novel. This was more of an inspirational read for me than a good story.
