Juliet Takes a Breath tells the story of a queer, Puerto Rican girl trying to figure out what it means to be herself, outside of all the ways the world tries to define her. Juliet wants to find herself this summer, and she believes she’s found a way to do so by leaving her familiar life in the Bronx for Portland for her dream internship. Harlow Brisbane, legendary feminist author and public lesbian figure, is sure to be the solution to Juliet’s questions about her own identity. Everything does not go as planned, however, when a botched coming out and a harsh reality check on who Harlow Brisbane truly is leave Juliet floundering, and even more lost than before. Finding yourself isn’t an instant process, though, and Juliet is ready to fight to find where she fits in the world.

Gabby Rivera has long been one of my favorite authors, starting with her work on Marvel’s “America” series, about America Chavez, and young, queer, Latina superhero, and I was thrilled to be chosen to read Juliet Takes a Breath! Her writing is complex and personal, creating a voice for Juliet that is deeply knowable. This book is important, because there can never be enough young adult novels with diverse voices. Rivera’s story is one that many will see themselves in, and I hope that the world will give it the recognition it deserves.

You can get your copy of Juliet Takes a Breath on September 17th!

My Recommendation-
I recommend this book to all people who are currently on a path of finding themselves (and really who isn’t). Additionally, if you are looking for a book that explores intersectionality in feminism, and the importance of respect while speaking, Juliet Takes a Breath addresses many issues from the eyes of someone who hasn’t been inundated in a world where discussing such things is commonplace. Juliet’s perspective is fresh, and brings a personal light to many current issues.
