If you’re a fan of books about family ties, the family we create and the family we are given this is the book for you. Judge’s Girls follows the lives of Maya, Jeanie and Ryder after the death of Judge Joe, a prominent judge in Georgia. Maya, Judge Joe’s daughter has never gotten along with his second wife, Jeanie. After Maya’s mother passed away lets just say Maya was less than thrilled to have a new stepmother. However, Maya loves Jeanie’s daughter Ryder as if she is her sister by blood. They’re two peas in a pod, regardless of their differences. When the terms of Judge Joe’s will come to the surface, Jeanie is less than pleased and begins down a spiral of alcohol abuse and self destruction. Maya has to step in and take care of her 17 year old sister who is not only grieving the loss of the only father she ever knew, but also trying to take care of her mother. Though all three women are different in terms of racial background, socioeconomic status and beliefs, one thing is true: they loved Judge Joe and are all grieving in their own way. Will they put their differences aside and stick together for Judge Joe’s memory?
This book had me feeling all the feels. After losing my dad last year I have tended to avoid books about loss because I wasn’t sure how I would feel reading them. To be honest I thought I would never be able to read a book about the loss of a parent again but this book proved me wrong. The way Sharina Harris developed each of these women’s characters was amazing. In particular, I related to Maya’s character so much. Everything she said she was feeling about losing her dad made me feel so seen and understood. Harris spoke about racial issues so eloquently and I loved that by the end of the book everything came full circle. This story is about grief, addiction, loss, family and most importantly, love. If you’re a fan of The Invincible Summer of Juniper Jones, I have a feeling you would really enjoy this book. This book will stick with me for a very long time.
