The story opens with the funeral of the patriarch of the family, Joseph Donaldson - judge, African American, and strong community member. He leaves behind three very different women: his second wife, Jeanie, who is a much younger white woman, that appears to have no resilience after his death; his biological daughter, Maya, an aspiring attorney herself, who shared a very close relationship with him; and Ryder, Jeanie's daughter, who considered Joseph her dad and has a special relationship with her step-sister, Maya. The complication ~ in spite of the fact that these three have not always gotten along, they must now live together in the same house, which was left to Maya, per Joseph's will!! The fighting and changes begin.

This novel chronicles their struggle to work through the circumstances they find themselves facing. It touches on racial misunderstanding, alcoholism, searching for self in your teen-age years, romantic relationships, trust, the part extended family can play in your life, and so much more. The author portrays her characters as authentic and relevant, with messages that are pertinent in today's society.
