Judge’s Girls is about a family struggling to put everything back together after the death of their larger-than-life patriarch. If you know me personally, you’d know why I was drawn to this book.

I could really relate to the character Maya, tough-as-nails lawyer working at a firm that does not deserve her. She and her sister, Ryder, have an amazing bond which I envy. Ryder is a quiet high school student, into poetry, and mixes in with the wrong crowd for a bit after the death of her father. I found her to also be a very relatable character. I wound up resenting Ryder’s mother and Maya’s stepmother, Jeanie, who turns into a drunk and embarrasses both of her daughters publicly and in separate instances. I didn’t really find her arc to be thoroughly redeeming, but that may say more about my character than hers.

Overall, I enjoyed this read. It took me out of my horror/thriller comfort zone, and so I can’t complain.
