I had not heard of this book before picking it up but boy am I glad I did! While there is an overarching theme of family drama, at the heart of this book is the complex story of living with addiction, racism, sexism and grief. Now, that description should not turn you away and you should not be worried about it being too heavy because just like life there is also strength, resilience and love found within.

It is hard for me to pick a favorite character in this one. I loved Maya's strength, Ryder's passion for poetry and Roland's sex appeal. I thought the characters complemented each other while not feeling forced. While there were a few moments that I felt were predictable, I found myself enjoying the process of getting there.

This book made me laugh and cry. I think it is a great option for book clubs as it brings up many difficult topics. I'll also add that there is some romance, with one scene sharing a lot of details but for someone who is not a big romance fan I found that it was just enough.
