This book describes a somewhat dysfunctional blended family. The crisis that opens the book is the death of the patriarch, Judge Joe Donaldson. Maya, his daughter, has now lost both parents since her mother had passed away much earlier.

Also grieving is Joe's second wife, Jeanie, and his step-daughter, Ryder. The interracial aspect of the family adds interest to me. While Joe and Maya are black, Jeanie and Ryder are white. I wonder what role this will play in the story.

While Maya holds a lot of hostility for her stepmother, she and Ryder get along wonderfully. Ryder spent her whole life with Joe and thinks of him only as "daddy" even though they are not genetically related.

The hitch in the family as thy move forward is that in addition to inheriting most of her father's money, Maya also inherits the house. There is only one catch Jeanie and Ryder are free to live there as long as thy want. This infuriates Maya. She sees her stepmother as an opportunistic drunk only out for what she could get from Joe Donaldson.

I see three women circling each other in a love/hate/tolerance kind of way and I will be fascinated to see how it all plays out. I would love to read and review this book.
