After Maya's mother dies unexpectedly when she's a young girl, her father remarries to a woman who's much younger, a completely different personality and a different race. Not surprisingly, Maya and her stepmother Jeanie don't get along. Surprisingly, Maya gets along incredibly well with her stepsister Riley. And Riley's relationship with her mother is kind of a mixed bag. Needless to say, when Maya's father dies the women get thrown even closer together and drama ensues. The preview mainly starts with Maya and Riley and barely delves into Jeanie, though I suspect it's relatively evenly distributed across the three POVs throughout the book. Nevertheless, that start doesn't leave me thinking highly of Jeanie - and curious as to how she'll play out throughout the book. And if Maya, who thinks Jeanie is coddled, will realize that she has had her own dose of being taken care of by Daddy as well.
