We open with a funeral, which sets the mood for this story. 27 year old Maya's father has died and left her with her stepmother, who was 15 years younger than her father and her sister Ryder. Maya doesn't like her stepmother Jeanie and is critical of her. The only positive Maya seems to make of her father's marriage to Jeanie is her sister Ryder. Maya and Ryder's father was a judge and Maya seems to be working on following in his footsteps trying to become a partner at her law firm. She has a rocky relationship with a man named Ryland who she sees twice a week (Tuesdays and Saturdays) and looks at him as more of a booty call than a real relationship. The main problem that I'm sure will persist through out the novel is that Maya's father left his house to Maya under the condition that Jeanie be allowed to stay "until she sees fit". Maya freaks out since the house is her mother's (Who is deceased) and doesn't want Jeanie living there with her. I'm actually excited to see how their relationship plays out and to see how these three women (Well two women and a teenager) will grow.
