DS Jack Webb is moving up the ranks. His boss, DCI Ridley, understands his intelligence and appreciates his insights into criminal behavior. In the past DCI Ridley has seen and used other men to successfully catch criminals. This time he loans Jack out to the Chipping Norton station because they have a burglary gang that arrears to be escalating in terms of violence. Plus this is a neighborhood of rich people with large houses and lots of easily fenced goods like cash, jewels, and art.
Jack easily determines there must be an inside person feeding information to the gang. He discovers who that person is. Since the insider is being forced to provide information, Jack doesn't want to make them become a police informant, correctly determining they wouldn't be able to keep that secret. This is only one thing Jack does differently from his superiors.
This is a very good, thrilling police procedural. British police for sure, but still police. How Jack solves the case, keeps his job, survives his superior offices and helps some friends of the family make for a fascinating and thrilling story. Jack is still melding his bio-father, Harry Rollins, and his nurturing adoptive father, Charlie Webb, into his character. It's all a lot of fun.
I enjoyed the story. I recommend it to you. Be sure to catch the first book in this series also.
I received the copy of the book I read for this review from BookishFirst.
