I may just have a new detective series addiction(although I'm not giving up Lucas Davenport or Virgil Flowers-Sandford). Jack Warr is a son, a husband and new father, and of course a Detective Constable. A really good one.

He's also human, which means he's flawed, which also makes him more interesting. I guess I'm leaning towards a character analysis here. "Judas Horse" DOES have a plot with chilling crimes and unsavory characters, however I feel like I'm shadowing DC Warr as he sleuths and ponders and persistently unravels a series of increasingly dangerous crimes. LaPlante skillfully writes in third person, but draws us in as if it's a story told in first person.

Some earlier reviews/impressions said this story gets off to a slow start, but I think we're early enough in the series that perhaps LaPlante is carefully crafting her main character's background. Things soon pick up and Jack Warr is in it up to his neck. And, yes, you will find out the truth about that body in the horse box!
