This is a police detective novel. It takes place in the English countryside. Some serious crimes are being committed and they concern everyone, the rich and the poor alike. Jack Warr is a policeman who manages to get the job done when others seem to be stuck at a standstill. Jack is transferred to a different area to help the locals. He is a very conscientous cop who also has a private life. Having just become a first time father, he also needs time away from a newborn in the house. He has to deal with being the new guy in the station, jealousy, incompetence and political rivalries. All while solving the crimes and not stepping on anyone's toes too badly. It was a very well written story. I only hope the author decides to make a series about this all too human cop. I could follow his cases forever. Lynda La Plante is a talented writer that I will be looking for in the future.
