A Good Detective Novel

I really enjoyed the mystery, detective aspect of this book. However, I wasn’t a huge fan of the writing style. This was my first time reading a book by Lynda La Plante, and therefore my first time reading of her detective Jack Warr. You don’t have to read the previous Jack Warr novel, but it would help in understanding some of the personal backgrounds.
I thought this story started off really interesting, with two kids finding a body. But up until the last couple chapters it was a very slow-moving book. I also really liked the idea of the “Judas horse”, and how it relates to the story, but I didn’t feel like that metaphor really encompassed the whole concept of the book.
I would have liked more details about the actual case. A lot of the case-related information was told to you after it was discovered, because a lot of it was found by other detectives/officers, that we readers got the information when Jack Warr was reported to. I would have preferred more details on how information was found. Instead, a lot of detail was put into the personal lives of characters. I understand having the personal aspect of Jack since he’s the main character, but felt like it was really unneeded for others. Some of the personal lives come into play later on, but even then that still wasn’t really pertinent to the story.
I did like that this was written in third person, and even though Jack was the main character, others’ perspectives were told when it made sense to give the reader a bigger picture of what else is happening.
Overall, I liked the mystery, but felt like the story was a bit lacking.
