I am a huge fan of Louisa May Alcott‘s Little Women, which is loosely based on the lives of her and her three sisters . I was very nervous reading this spin-off, because I do not think marketing off other’s works, especially those how are no longer alive, is completely respectful. It just rubs me the wrong way. Yes, you can say they are paying tribute to Alcott’s classic, but would she appreciate you playing with the idea of having Jo and Laurie closer than intended at times. Alcott originally didn’t want Jo with anyone, but was pressured to do so by her publisher. So, when I was reading the spin-off I felt Alcott had lost her agency once again in order to make profit. Nonetheless, the spin-off was not at all terrible. It clearly was no where near Alcott’s genuine writing, but for fans of the March family you’ll feel the nostalgia.
